Vancouver Take Aim Against Buffalo Tonight In Attempt To Stay In Playoff Hunt

The Vancouver Canucks, 2-5-2 in their last 9 road games, since Jan 1 take on the Buffalo Sabres tonight in the 4th game of their 6 game road trip at KeyBank Center.

The Canucks play the Sabres in their second and final meeting this season.

The Canucks are 24-25-6 after 55 games, in 6th spot in the Pacific division, while the Sabres are in 7th spot in the Atlantic division with a record of 23-22-10.

Vancouver sits 6 points behind both Los Angeles and Nashville who occupy the two wild card playoff positions in the Western conference.

The Sabres are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games, while the Canucks are 4-6-0.

Vancouver is 6-3-1 in their last 10 games against Buffalo (3-2-0 in their last 5 games).

Tonight marks the conclusion of the Canucks’ 12th of 16 back-to-back series this season. They are 8-14-1 in back-to-backs thus far this season. In 2015.16, the Canucks played in 13 back-to-back series posting a record of 10-12-4.

Vancouver has 27 games left, with 14 on the road, with a present road record of 7-17-3, 2nd worst in the NHL, and have to do much better with their remaining road contests if they are to secure a playoff spot for the post season.

At home the Canucks are 17-8-3, tied for the 11th best home record in the NHL, and will need that home record to continue as it has if Vancouver is going to have any chance at all, especially if their play in road games continue to provide disappointment.

  • Bo Horvat notched his 100th NHL point with a goal on Feb. 11 at BOS. According to Elias Sports, he is the 8th youngest player to record 100 points for the Canucks at 21 years, 283 days.
    • The last player as young as Horvat to reach the 100-point mark for the Canucks was Petr Nedved (Jan. 27/93; 21 years, 49 days).
  • Horvat currently leads the team in goals (16), and points (36) and ranks 2nd in assists (20).
  • Alex Edler notched his 40th career PPG on Feb. 7 at NSH. He currently ranks second all-time among Canucks defencemen and fifth all-time in among Swedish-born defencemen in PPG.
  • Through 50 games, Sven Baertschi has registered 13 goals, 14 assists and 27 points. He is within one point and two goals of tying career season highs.
  • Through 55 games, Markus Granlund has already set career-highs in goals (14) and points (23). He is 1 assist from tying his career high for assists in a single season set during the 2014.15 season.
  • Nikita Tryamkin ranks t-6th among NHL rookies in hits per game with 2.4 (min. 10 games played) and 6th in total rookie hits (107).
  • Troy Stecher ranks 7th in rookie TOI/game with 20:33, 13th in rookie shots on goal with 95 and 5th in rookie defencemen assists with 13.

  • According to Elias Sports, Daniel and Henrik have been in on the same goal 696 times which ranks second in NHL history. Gretzky-Kurri rank first in this category having been in on the same goal 764 times.
  • The Canucks have scored a power-play goal in 4 straight games for the first time this season operating at 33.3% during this stretch (4-for-12).

Jacob Markstrom will get the game start against the Sabres, after defeating Buffalo 2-1 back on October 20 at Rogers Arena.

Markstrom will make his 22nd start of the season, 13th on the road.

Markstrom’s season totals stand at 9-10-3, with a 2.59 GAA, and a .913 Sv% and no shutouts, in 21 game starts.

On the road he is, 4-8-1, with a 2.48 GAA, and a .920 Sv%.

Alex Edler and Markus Granlund extended their point streaks to 3 games against the Bruins on Saturday afternoon, with Edler picking up an assist and Granlund a goal:

Vancouver continues to be in 6th place in the Pacific division, with 54 points, 13 points ahead 7th place Arizona, 5 points behind 5th place Calgary; 6 points from 4th place Los Angeles.

Los Angeles and Nashville presently occupy the two wild card playoff positions, with 60 points, with Vancouver 6 points behind both teams.

Vancouver take their road trip next to Pittsburgh (Feb. 14), finishing up against St. Louis (Feb. 16).
